Background of the study
This study investigates how interpreting challenges affect Igbo political discourse in Enugu, a hub of political activity and cultural expression. Interpreting in political contexts is crucial for ensuring clear communication between diverse stakeholders and for the proper representation of indigenous languages. In Enugu, where Igbo is a primary medium for political debates and public addresses, interpreters are frequently required to bridge linguistic gaps during political events, parliamentary sessions, and community forums (Nwachukwu, 2023). However, challenges such as inadequate training, linguistic ambiguities, and time constraints may compromise the accuracy and clarity of the interpretation. These issues can lead to miscommunication, distort political messages, and ultimately affect democratic participation. The study employs qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews with professional interpreters, analysis of recorded political events, and participant observation. It examines how interpreting challenges—ranging from terminology mismatches to cultural nuances—impact the flow of political discourse. Furthermore, the research explores potential strategies to mitigate these challenges through enhanced interpreter training and improved policy guidelines. By evaluating these factors, the study aims to contribute to a more effective political communication framework that honors the linguistic richness and political vitality of the Igbo language (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Interpreting challenges in Igbo political discourse in Enugu pose a significant barrier to effective communication. Issues such as inconsistent terminology, limited interpreter proficiency, and rapid speech during political engagements have led to frequent misinterpretations (Nwachukwu, 2023). These challenges not only distort political messages but also risk undermining public trust in the democratic process. The lack of standardized training and support for interpreters further exacerbates these problems. Consequently, stakeholders struggle to convey nuanced political opinions, and critical political debates may suffer from loss of meaning. This study seeks to identify the specific interpreting challenges and assess their impact on political discourse, thereby offering recommendations to enhance interpreter performance and ensure more accurate communication in Igbo political settings (Okoro, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To examine the types of interpreting challenges in Igbo political discourse.
To assess the impact of these challenges on political communication in Enugu.
To recommend strategies for improving interpreter training and performance.
Research questions:
What interpreting challenges are most common in Igbo political discourse?
How do these challenges affect the clarity and accuracy of political messages?
What measures can improve interpreting practices in political settings?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the critical role of interpreting in shaping political discourse within Igbo communities. The findings will inform policymakers, interpreter training institutions, and political stakeholders about the challenges and potential solutions to improve communication accuracy. By addressing these issues, the research contributes to enhanced democratic participation and more effective political engagement in Enugu (Nwachukwu, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining interpreting challenges in Igbo political discourse in Enugu, focusing on recorded political events and professional interpreter interviews.
Definitions of terms:
